TONY BARNEY DIRECTOR Tony Barney brings experienced and creative direction to the Gay News Network. Joining the crew with the third show, Tony's lighting direction immediately captured the look and feel that has propelled GNN's quality well beyond standard cable access productions. His adept studio direction helped GNN win the Telly Award for best informational program from FCAC and for garnering a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Achievement In Cable Television Production. Tony's many other creative endeavors have also won awards. With his spouse, Marlene, Tony formed their own production company, NoraBett Productions in 1992. The creative team of Tony and Marlene has produced two award-winning cable television programs, "WomanSide" and "The Art of Karate," an instructional martial arts limited series. In 1993 and in 1995, "WomanSide," a television interview program that promotes women's empowerment and leadership, won a Fairfax Cable Access Corporation "Telly" Award for "Best Talk Show Series." In 1994 and again in 1995, "The Art of Karate" won two "Telly" Awards – one for "Best Sports Series" and one for "Best Instructional/Training Series" In 1995, "WomanSide" won the Hometown Video Festival Award for "Best Talk Show Series." The Hometown Video Festival is the most competitive for community television in the United States and Canada. In 1996, "WomanSide" was awarded another "Telly" for "Best Community Affairs Series." In addition to these two series, Tony, has produced various public service announcements, including the award-winning "Women's Center 10K Run/5K Walk" and "Radio it's Unbelievable." Tony is responsible for everything that goes on behind the camera." Among Tony's many contributions to this producing team are lighting, designing and coordinating the sets, organizing and coordinating the crew and editing all segments. Tony was born in Santa Monica, CA and raised and educated in Santa Barbara, CA. As a boy growing up in southern California, Tony developed a passion for the movies, aspiring to be a producer/director. After graduating from high school, Tony took technical and college courses at Santa Barbara City College and the University of California at Santa Barbara, becoming an Electrical/Mechanical Designer. After transferring with his job to the Northern Virginia area in 1989, Tony turned his creative, technical and organizational abilities to his first love of video and film production, taking courses in the field at Fairfax Cable Access Corporation and American University. He has since worked on multiple projects including a PSA for the Multiple Sclerosis Association, produced by Women in Film and Video and a feature film. For his individual work in video, Tony has been recognized with Fairfax Cable Access Corporation's Telly Award for "Best Lighting" in 1993, "Best EFP Director" in 1995, "Best Studio Director" and Best Television Scriptwriter" in 1996. Tony is presently a Designer in Herndon, VA. and Executive Vice President of the Board of Directors of Fairfax Cable Access Corporation. |
