The partner of actor, Marlo Thomas, Phil Donahue accepted a lifetime achievement award from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) in 1996. This show covers the ceremony and passionate Donahue's acceptance speech given in Washington DC at the National Press Club.

After Donahue's remarks, field reporter Bob Connelly put the outspoken talk show host on the other end of a microphone. Connelly asks Donahue about his long career as reigning talk show king, his coming of age, and how he's furthered fair and accurate images of gay and lesbian lives on television.

Wrapping up this special presentation of GNN, hosts Holly Landau and Joe Liberatore accepted a GLAAD award on behalf of the GNN. In another award ceremony the gay and lesbian news program was awarded a 1997 GLAAD media award for Outstanding Achievement in Cable Television Production. The show also features a new public service announcement (PSA) from Betty Degenerous, made available to GNN by the Human Rights Campaign.
