Description

A new GNN segment – "Gay News Watch" sees Jimmy Somerville hit high notes and Michael Boatman sing the blues about minorities on television.

Show Information

News summaries focus on a review of what civil rights the new Millennium brought to gay and lesbians around the world. Plus, the "Watch" looks at Holland's approval of gay and lesbian marriage, the Florida based C1TV network, and the years of taunts and death threats that lead to the closing of the Casa Nova gay bar in Somerset PA. Thanks to the lesbian avengers video footage GNN viewers will see first hand what the owner and patrons of Casa Nova faced.

In the Washington Report, GNN's Executive Producer Joe Liberatore sits down with singer Jimmy Somerville before his performance at last year's DC Gay Pride festival. A major voice in the 80's disco and dance music scene, Somerville hails from Scotland and was the first major pop star to be out of the closet. Viewers will also see clips from his very first video, "Small Town Boy," which dealt with the pain and isolation of a gay teen.

Then, GNN travels to Somerville's home country of Scotland to further investigate the gay life of Scots. Fiona Horne, the Director of the Edinburgh Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Community Center, which houses several gay shop, community groups and a café, sat down for a chat by the fireplace. Horne sheds light on the sometimes-dark days of growing up gay in Scotland's capital and how she came to lead the GLB community center.

In our final segment, we'll talk to the straight, but GLAAD Media award-winning, actor Michael Boatman of ABC's Spin City. Reporter Bill Line asks Boatman what it's like to be a double minority on a hit TV show – a black man and a gay sitcom character!
