Show Information

WASHINGTON, DC – This edition of "GNN Presents" is a re-edited version of the special news program that first aired 5 years ago.

The special 30 minute has been released to coincide with the 5th anniversary of the brutally shocking and senseless murder of Wyoming college student Matthew Shepard, age 21.

His murder, sparked outrage, tears and candle light vigils across the world. The largest such vigil occurred on the steps of the U.S. Capitol building, in Washington DC, just several days after his death.  The historic event was put together by several national Gay and Lesbian groups including, The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NLGTF) and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and was organized to honor Shepard's life and to demand passage of hate crimes legislation.

Many Hollywood stars joined members of Congress and a crowd of nearly 10,000 at the national vigil.  The speakers on this "GNN" show include:  Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), Rep. Richard Gephardt (D-Mo.), and former Sen. Alan K. Simpson (R-Wyo.); actors Ellen DeGeneres, Kristen Johnston ("3rd Rock from the Sun"), and Dan Butler ("Frasier") joined two of Matthew's best friends, Walt Boulden and Alex Trout.  Matthew's friends spoke about the compassionate and energetic Matthew Shepard they had known.  Walt said that Matt would never bounce up from his sofa anymore…and that "no matter what good might come of this event the price was too high!"

This timely re-release of this episode will help keep Mathew's legacy alive and should spark continued discussions and debates about the need for local, state and national hate crimes legislation and is the first in a planned two part series of special's to commemorate the legacy of Mathew Shepard.
