Solaris Things
As I think I mentioned, I work for Oracle. (Although, standard disclaimer applies - my thoughts/views/comments are my own, not theirs.)
Here's some stuff I've found that helps understand Solaris, Open Solaris, and just cool stuff Oracle's doing.
Hardware Sources
- Oracle. Purveyors of fine Sun SPARC and x86 servers and workstations. Oh, yeah, and databases. And app servers. and and and...
Software
- Solaris 10 is free. As in Free Beer. Download it here.
- The next version is based on the OpenSolaris kernel. Download that here. Note that OpenSolaris is no longer open; Oracle has brought development of it back in-house after build 2009.06.
- Oracle's Star Office , an OpenOffice branch, is MacOS compatible. And the OpenOffice port is free.
- Speaking of MacOS, there's now an App for Oracle Solaris Sysadmin training, part 1 for the iPad. This might actually convince me to get one...
- Didn't get to go to Open World 2010? Yeah, me either, but if you're interested in the sessions, they are now posted online. Oracle.com login required; I think that's a no-cost thing.
OS Hints and Tricks
- The VI Lover's Home Page.
- Safari Books, an online cornucopia of technical references.
- How to change your CDE wallpaper.
- A collection of games that run on Solaris.
- The DTrace OpenSolaris.org group.
- Learning Solaris.
- The Solaris Internals wiki. Maintained by Richard MacDougall, who wrote the book on solaris internals and tuning.
- TheGeekStuff.com and their list of 50 UNIX/Linux Sysadmin Tutorials. How to do a buncha different stuff; mostly Linux focused, but also generally applicable to Solaris as well.
- Admin.Com, home to the Unix and Linux System Administration handbook series. Now in it's fourth edition, if there was one book you wanted for general UNIX sysadmin resources, this is it. Not only is it an invaluable guide to fundamental UNIX sysadmin practices, it acts as a "rosetta stone" between flavors of Unix, including Solaris 10, OpenSolaris, AIX, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, HP-UX, and Ubuntu Linux. Buy this book.
Useful stuff from Oracle Tech Network
Sun used to maintain a site called "BigAdmin". It has been rolled into OTN, the Oracle Tech Network, post acquisition.
